ENTER THE DRAGON
Travellers around Sydney might have noticed an outbreak of colourful flags currently cheering up our usually monotone city streets. The flags, commissioned by the Sydney City Council, have been designed by MAMBO artist, Chrissy Lau to celebrate Chinese New Year. They also feature in an ad campaign on SBS television. So popular have the flags become that Chrissy has recently picked up several new stalkers … followers, on Twitter including, Sydney’s Lord Mayor, Clover Moore.

Most surf/street companies would call up an agency and throw a large amount of cash at a handful of models to help advertise new product but when you’re got the cast of Clerks huddled around a light table in the studio, upstairs you’d be mad not to use that money to fill up the bar fridge. These are the people who design the Mambo clothes you wear. And this is how they get to work … when they get to work.

I don’t think that we’d be over egging the custard to say that Reg Mombassa is the world’s greatest living t-shirt artist. He is also a much acclaimed musician, one of this country’s most collected ‘fine’ artists, a published writer, a poet, a humanist, a dispenser of arcane wisdom, a buggerer of sacred cows and not least, a much loved national treasure.
